If you live on the East Side of New York, especially the areas bordered by the Tompkins Square Park, Washington Square Park, Union Square Park, and the Essex Market, there’s a chance you’ve spotted the Rogue House Salon on 7th Street at some point. With an interior even more elegant than the eye-catchy, mystical exterior, it is hard to miss it. Now a known brand in the hairstyling world in New York and beyond, the journey to setting foot on one of the world’s most urban cities began years ago in Los Angeles.
Jamielynn De Leon grew up in Los Angeles with a single mom and sister. After watching her mom take on three jobs to give them the best life possible, she knew it was important to make a good life for her and her family. But rather than tow the expected path of becoming a doctor or lawyer like most Asian families would prefer, she had a different idea- a passion that began from a tender age with her fascination for beauty and the cash register.
She earned a cosmetology license while in high school and went on to bag a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Santa Barbara- mostly to fulfill the wishes of her mom. However, her eyes stayed focused on the goal- which was to storm the hairstyling and beauty industry with a difference. Jamielynn had received some education at the Fred Segal Beauty Salon and the Vidal Sasoon while in Los Angeles. But it was the big move to New York, the city of dreams, that would go on to change her life forever.
There are thousands of salons in New York, and Manhattan is at the heart of hairstyling. So, when Jamielynn had the opportunity to work with Ted Gibson- one of the best-known names in the industry- she grabbed it. That was in 2008. Later on, she moved to downtown Manhattan and worked with Birds and Fellas, a startup Salon which she helped build an impressive clientele and improved operations. Building a reputation for herself at this time, Jamielynn was snatched up by an up-and-coming Salon called Fox and Jane, serving as their first manager and helping to transform the outfit’s systems and operations.
Putting all of these experiences together, Jamielynn would go on to establish her own salon, the Rogue House in 2016 with a goal to “create a space for trend blazers and those who love to express themselves”. This, she says, was the reason she chose to establish her Salon in the East Village where people aren’t afraid to experiment. Her work earned her significant mentions on platforms like The Jack Show, The Today Show, Time Out New York, and Loverly. Over the years, she has also been a consistent participant at the New York Fashion Week, acting as lead stylist for top fashion designers like Cindy Monterio and Vishali.
Now a master stylist, having spent more than 20 years in the industry, Jamielynn De Leon is not just attempting a reinvention of hairstyling through affordable, honest and inclusive hair styling practices, but also giving a platform for the next generation of hairstylists and entrepreneurs both as an IPEC Life Coach and as an inspiring voice in the beauty industry.
