‘Life is Beautiful’ with Sonia Borrell's Curatorial Debut at Galerie Zberro

Art has a unique way of bringing people together, transcending borders, and creating connections that words alone cannot. This fall, the ‘New Now’ art movement will be celebrated in an exhibition that promises to captivate and inspire. Sonia Borrell, in collaboration with Galerie Zberro, is set to unveil the 30-artist group exhibition ‘Life is Beautiful’ in Paris’s 8th Arrondissement. This event is a testament to the vision and dedication of Sonia Borrell, an art collector and curator whose passion for contemporary art knows no bounds.

Sonia Borrell, known for her Tryson Collection, has been a fervent supporter of living artists for over 16 years. Her approach to art collecting has always been deeply personal, focusing on pieces that resonate with her emotionally. “Art is an essential part of life and makes it beautiful,” Sonia explains. “Curating this exhibition is a way to share that beauty with a broader audience.”

A Curated Showcase

The ‘Life is Beautiful’ exhibition features artists from all corners of the world, representing a diverse array of styles and perspectives. Notable artists include Annabel Faustin, August Vilella, Felix Treadwell, Imon Boy, Marria Pratts, Ryo Laksamana (RYOL), Fandi, Socko, Sol Felpeto, Ana Barriga, Tania Marmolejo, Yosuke Ueno, Yuri Rodekin, Alexander Guy, Kencut, Austin Lee, Su Su, Camilla Engstrom, Sol Summers, Johanna Tordjman, Kean, Young Lee, Taro Yamada, Krisitn Moore, Adam Handler, Joscef Csato. Sonia’s keen eye for new talent and her ability to identify emerging trends are evident in this impressive lineup.

“I always keep a close watch on the artists within my collection,” Sonia says. “When I notice they’re creating standout pieces, I’m keen to acquire what I see as the best among them.” Her search for new influences often leads her to vibrant art scenes in South Korea, Japan, and Indonesia, with a particular fondness for Indonesia’s rich tapestry of talent. Recently, she has turned her attention to the Philippines, captivated by a burgeoning Pop Surrealism scene brimming with promising new artists.

A Conversation Behind the Collaboration from Mutual Admiration

The collaboration between Sonia Borrell and Galerie Zberro is a perfect match. Geraldine Zberro, the founder of Galerie Zberro, has managed the gallery for nearly two decades, showcasing international artists in the heart of Paris. “I am super excited to be curating the show in Galerie Zberro’s space,” Sonia shares. “With Carl Kostyál lending part of his network to join Geraldine Zberro’s and my own roster of artists, we’re sure to create an impactful, 3-week experience.”

Carl Kostyál, a gallerist known for bringing international attention to emerging artists, has been a significant influence on the contemporary art scene. His support, combined with Geraldine’s expertise and Sonia’s curatorial vision, promises an exhibition that will be both innovative and deeply engaging.

Sonia’s journey into the art world began in the quiet moments of her childhood, spent with crayons and coloring books, and has evolved into a vibrant career as an art collector and curator. Born into a traditional family in Barcelona, where a career in law seemed almost preordained, she initially followed the expected route, earning her master’s degree in law. Yet, her passion for art never waned.

Her journey into art collecting began in 2008, and she quickly became known for her empathetic approach to building relationships with artists. “I sit down and talk with the artists,” she says, emphasizing the importance of understanding the people behind the art. This personal connection is the cornerstone of her collection philosophy, guiding every acquisition.

Sharing Art with the World

Sonia’s commitment to sharing art extends beyond her personal collection. She lends artworks to museums, allowing a broader audience to experience the pieces she holds dear. For instance, the Museo del Novecento in Florence currently has one of her pieces from André Butzer on display until the end of the summer. This practice not only enriches public collections but also underscores her dedication to making art accessible.

Her recent visit to Saudi Arabia highlighted the global nature of this mission. Meeting local artists and young people in Jeddah, she was struck by their eagerness to immerse themselves in the art world. “Living in Europe, we’re fortunate to experience this vibrant art scene right on our doorstep,” she notes. “In contrast, the young people I met in Jeddah must travel great distances just to see an original piece by Takashi Murakami, Stik, or Banksy in person.” This realization underscored the need to bring the art scene closer to the younger generation in the Middle East, fostering a deeper connection and appreciation for art within their own communities.

‘Life Is Beautiful’

She’s now preparing for the ‘Life is Beautiful’ exhibition and working on an exciting announcement with collectors from the Middle East, expanding the reach and influence of the Tryson Collection. “Art is a way of living,” she says. “These young artists are, and will be, just as impactful as those before them.”

The exhibition will also mark the premiere of Sonia’s first published book, ‘Art in Real-Time,’ a practical guide for young collectors and artists. “I believe the book, much like the exhibition, showcases my philosophy of what art collecting should be,” she explains.

The ‘Life is Beautiful’ exhibition at Galerie Zberro is more than just an art show; it is a celebration of the transformative power of art and the enduring connections it fosters. Sonia Borrell’s dedication to nurturing emerging talent and sharing art with a broader audience shines through in every piece on display. As she continues to build her legacy, Sonia’s passion for art remains as vibrant and inspiring as ever, reminding us all that indeed, life is beautiful.
