The Story of Chef Braunda Smith

Braunda Smith is a culinary sensation who has established herself in the highly competitive food service industry. She faced many challenges on her journey to success, such as balancing the responsibilities of being a military spouse, raising children, moving frequently, getting remarried, and rediscovering her passion. Nonetheless, she persisted, and her hard work paid off with the takeoff of her flourishing business, Lucy Cooper’s Ice House.

Early Life and Career

Braunda was born and raised in a small town in Georgia, where she developed a passion for cooking at an early age. Her mother and grandmother were talented home cooks who taught her how to make traditional Southern/Cajun dishes. These experiences sparked her desire to continue learning throughout her adolescence. After finishing high school, she met her “practice husband” who later joined the United States Army. They tied the knot and embarked on an adventure that led them to various corners of the globe.

Being a military spouse can be challenging, especially when it comes to finding employment. Moving frequently and adapting to new environments can make it difficult to establish a life of your own and a career. However, Braunda made it work for her. Despite the challenge of caring for her young children, she used her cooking skills to provide meals for the hard-working military men around her. This work helped her discover new things and truly hone her skills.

Although she had worked in service on occasion, it wasn’t until her divorce from her practice husband that she made the decision to permanently return to the service industry. After several years of hard work, and help from her family, she was able to start her own business, Lucy Cooper’s.

Lucy Cooper’s menu features a variety of dishes that reflect both Braunda’s southern upbringing and her international travels. From interesting shareables to one-of-a-kind entrees, the bar’s menu has something for everyone. Braunda’s commitment to creative and delicious cooking has earned her a loyal following of customers who rave about her refreshing new take on classic bar eats.

Awards and Recognition

All of her hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed. Braunda has been featured in local and national media outlets, including a spot competing on Food Network’s Chopped and Guy’s Grocery Games. She is also a candidate for the 2023 UNESCO City of Gastronomy Chef Ambassador Program for San Antonio. San Antonio is one of only 2 cities in the United States that has this designation. Braunda has also used her business to give back to the community, supporting local charities and organizations in her city.

Despite the challenges life has thrown her way, she never gave up on her dream of becoming a successful chef and entrepreneur. Her commitment to quality, community, and service has made her a beloved local figure in Texas and beyond. Lucy Cooper’s Ice House continues to thrive under her leadership. Her legacy as a culinary entrepreneur and community leader is only just beginning.
